What makes a ceramic kamado different?
A ceramic kamado combines a charcoal fire with a thick-walled cooking chamber and a close-fitting lid. The ceramic body retains heat, while airflow controls help regulate the fire.
This makes a kamado an option for cooks who enjoy working with charcoal and want to explore different cooking methods. The experience still depends on the fuel, airflow settings and cooking setup; heat retention does not mean that every model will run for the same number of hours.
For a broader comparison of shapes and construction types, explore our charcoal barbecues.
What can you cook on a kamado BBQ?
Direct heat suits foods such as steaks, burgers and vegetables. For roasting or slower cooking, compatible heat deflector plates create a barrier between the fire and the food.
With the appropriate accessories and temperature settings, a kamado can also be used for dishes such as pizza, bread and whole roast chicken. The important detail is the setup: a pizza stone, deflector or additional cooking rack should be compatible with the exact model.
Check what is included before ordering. Accessories shown in cooking photographs are not necessarily part of the standard package.
Which kamado size and configuration should you choose?
Start with the cooking diameter and the dishes you plan to make. Larger cuts and meals with several components need space for more than the main ingredient. Also consider whether the cooking system allows different grate levels or configurations.
Next, compare the complete package. A model supplied with a trolley and side shelves is a different purchase from a Solo or Stand-Alone version intended for a suitable support or cooking station.
Our kamado cooking stations are worth exploring when planning a dedicated area, but compatibility, support and installation clearances must be checked for the selected grill.
Do all kamado grills use the same temperature controls?
No. Traditional kamados rely on manual adjustment of the air vents, while selected models add electronic assistance.
For example, the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe models in our range include digital temperature management and app connectivity. These features should not be assumed across the whole category.
Decide whether you prefer managing the fire manually or would value electronic controls, and check any power requirements before choosing where the barbecue will stand.
What fuel and care does a kamado need?
Follow the manufacturer’s fuel guidance and choose suitable lumpwood charcoal. Use an approved lighting method and keep the airflow passages clear of ash.
Cleaning requirements differ between the ceramic interior, cooking grates and external components, so follow the instructions for each part rather than treating the entire barbecue in the same way.
Before buying, compare the cooking system, included accessories and maintenance access alongside the size. Those practical details will shape how you use your kamado far more than its appearance alone.
