The Char-Griller spray bottle is designed to apply liquid to food whilst barbecuing. It allows you to add moisture or flavour when the dish requires it, particularly when cooking foods where you want to prevent the surface from drying out.

You can also use it in the kitchen to apply liquids to your dishes. Its design means you can keep the mixture to hand and spray it whilst you’re cooking.

Water, juices, marinades and barbecue sauce

You can fill the bottle with water, juice, marinade or barbecue sauce, depending on the result you’re aiming for. This way, you have the liquid ready to apply whilst cooking, without having to pour it directly from another container.

Spraying helps to moisten the surface of the food and infuse it with the flavour of your chosen liquid. If you’re using a marinade or sauce, make sure its consistency is suitable for use with the spray bottle.

0.5-litre capacity

The bottle has a capacity of 0.5 litres. You can prepare the liquid you’re going to use in it and keep it to hand whilst you’re cooking.

This capacity is handy when you want to apply the liquid several times throughout the cooking process. The amount you’ll need will depend on the food, the cooking time and how much liquid you spray each time.

Easy-to-use spray trigger

The handle features a trigger that allows you to spray the contents with one hand. You can aim the bottle at the area you want to moisten and press the trigger when you need to add liquid.

It’s a convenient way to intervene whilst cooking, for example when checking a piece of meat or a dish that needs a little more moisture on the surface.

Measurement marks on the bottle

The measurement lines on the bottle allow you to check how much liquid you’ve added. You can refer to them whilst filling the container or preparing a barbecue marinade.

Having the scale on the bottle itself means you don’t need to use another container just to check the quantity. It also helps you see how much is left before continuing with the cooking.

Secure-seal cap

The bottle features a secure cap. After filling it, check that the cap is properly sealed before taking it to the cooking area or starting to spray.

This seal is part of the convenient design for use whilst barbecuing. You prepare the contents, close the bottle and keep it ready for subsequent use.

First use

  1. Hand-wash the inside of the bottle and the spray head with warm water and washing-up liquid.
  2. Rinse thoroughly. Fill the bottle with clean water and operate the trigger several times to rinse the tube.
  3. Empty out the rinse water before adding the liquid you intend to use.

During use

  1. Fill the bottle with water, juice, marinade or barbecue sauce that can pass through the sprayer. Use the measurement markings if you need to control the quantity.
  2. Secure the spray head firmly and test the spray before directing it at the food.
  3. Spray whenever the food needs additional liquid, keeping the bottle away from flames and hot surfaces.
  4. Use clean liquid. A mixture that has come into contact with raw meat or chicken must not subsequently be applied to cooked food.

After cooking

  1. Empty out any remaining liquid, particularly if it contains juice, marinade or sauce.
  2. Rinse the bottle and operate the trigger with clean water to flush residue from the tube before it dries.

Cleaning

  1. Unscrew the spray head and hand-wash the bottle with warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft sponge or brush.
  2. Clean the accessible areas of the spray head. Then rinse the parts and spray clean water several times to remove residue from the mechanism.
  3. Allow the bottle and spray head to dry completely in a clean place before reassembling them.

Maintenance

  • Check that the trigger sprays normally and that the spray head closes correctly.
  • If a sauce or marinade makes spraying difficult, do not force the trigger: empty the bottle and run warm water through the mechanism.
  • Hand-wash the product. It has not been confirmed that this model is dishwasher safe.

Storage

Store the bottle empty and completely dry, with the spray head clean, in a place protected from the heat of the barbecue.

Barbecued chicken with potatoes

Chicken and potatoes on the barbecue beside a spray bottle Servings: 4 · Approximate cooking time: 40–60 minutes. The time will depend on the size of the pieces and the temperature of the barbecue.

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken leg quarters.
  • 800 g potatoes.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.
  • For the spray bottle: 120 ml water and 80 ml apple juice.

Method

  1. Prepare the potatoes. Cut them into wedges and boil them in water for 8–10 minutes. Drain, dry and mix them with the oil, half the paprika, salt and pepper.
  2. Season the chicken. Pat it dry with kitchen paper and add the remaining paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. There is no need to wash it.
  3. Prepare the barbecue. Set up an indirect cooking zone with the lid closed at around 190–200 °C. Place the potatoes in a barbecue-safe tray and the chicken in the indirect zone.
  4. Prepare the spray bottle. Mix the water and apple juice in a clean bottle. Keep this mixture separate from any utensils and surfaces that have come into contact with the raw chicken.
  5. Cook and spray. After around 20 minutes, lightly spray the chicken. Repeat only if the surface appears to need moisture; avoid soaking it so that it can brown properly. Turn the potatoes as necessary.
  6. Check for doneness. Remove the chicken when a thermometer reads at least 74 °C in the thickest part, without touching the bone. If the potatoes need more time, leave them until they are tender and golden.
Tip: always use clean liquid in the spray bottle. If a mixture has come into contact with raw chicken, do not spray it onto cooked food.
