A kamado is a ceramic charcoal barbecue with a lid that allows you to control the temperature precisely by regulating the air intake and outlet. Ceramic retains heat very well, so you can use the same barbecue to grill over a high heat, cook at a low temperature or smoke food.

The Kamado Joe Classic Joe I pack includes the barbecue with trolley, seven accessories and two bags of Big Block XL charcoal, each weighing 9.07 kg. It’s a comprehensive way to get started with your first kamado: from day one, you can cook on two levels, roast whole cuts on a rotisserie, grill smashburgers, prepare fish and vegetables, and protect the barbecue when not in use.

During this Black Friday promotion, the bundle is available at a 15 per cent discount on the total price of the individual products, subject to the promotion’s terms and conditions.

What’s included in the Kamado Joe Classic Joe I pack

  • 46 cm Classic Joe I kamado barbecue with trolley, folding side tables and Divide & Conquer system
  • JoeTisserie rotisserie for rotating roasts
  • Reversible cast-iron half-moon griddle
  • Half-moon grill grate for fish and vegetables
  • Soapstone (natural stone) half-moon plate
  • Stainless steel charcoal basket
  • LED handle for night-time cooking
  • Made-to-measure cover for Classic Joe I with trolley
  • 2 bags of Big Block XL charcoal, 9.07 kg each

46 cm Classic Joe I kamado barbecue with trolley

Barbacoa kamado Kamado Joe Classic Joe I roja con carrito, termómetro y regulador de ventilación

The Classic Joe I is Kamado Joe’s 46 cm ceramic kamado barbecue. Its body and lid maintain a stable cooking environment, allowing you to alternate between high-temperature grilling, roasting and slow cooking using the same charcoal barbecue.

You control the heat using the top cast-iron regulator and the bottom air inlet: the more oxygen reaches the embers, the more intense the combustion. The built-in thermometer shows you the internal temperature, whilst the trolley with lockable wheels and the folding side tables provide a practical space for preparing and serving food.

Divide & Conquer System

Sistema Divide & Conquer de dos niveles con parrillas de media luna en el kamado Classic Joe I

The two-tier Divide & Conquer system uses half-moon-shaped grates that you can position at different heights. This allows you to decide how close each food item is to the embers: for example, meat closer to the heat and vegetables on the upper level.

It also forms the basis for the half-moon-shaped surfaces in the pack (reversible griddle, fish and vegetable rack, and soapstone), which you can swap around depending on the menu without changing the barbecue.

JoeTisserie for roasting chicken and meat

Pollo entero asándose en el rustidor JoeTisserie del kamado Classic Joe

The JoeTisserie rotisserie converts the Classic Joe I into a rotisserie for whole cuts of meat. The spit keeps the meat rotating, so that all sides are continuously exposed to the heat and you don’t have to turn it by hand.

The spit and forks are made of stainless steel and the electric motor runs on 240 V. Its wedge-shaped ring fits into the opening of the kamado, so the lid can be closed whilst roasting to retain heat and smoke. It’s ideal for whole chicken, pork or roasts with a golden finish. Bear in mind, however, that it requires a power socket and you should secure the food properly before you start.

Reversible cast-iron griddle for smashburgers

Smashburger cocinándose en la plancha reversible de hierro fundido Kamado Joe

The half-moon cast-iron griddle is reversible: one smooth side for smashburgers and foods that require direct contact with a continuous surface, and a ribbed side for searing.

Cast iron accumulates and retains heat very well, making it an excellent surface for searing meat and cooking ingredients that would otherwise fall through the bars of a grill. It fits into the Divide & Conquer system and is a great option if you want your first kamado to double as an outdoor griddle.

Grill for cooking fish and vegetables in the kamado

Rejilla de acero inoxidable de media luna para cocinar pescado y verduras en kamado Kamado Joe

The half-moon grill for fish and vegetables is made from 304 stainless steel and features laser-cut grooves that provide better support for delicate foods.

Its design prevents pieces of vegetable from falling through the gaps and reduces the risk of fish fillets sticking or breaking when lifted. It’s the alternative to a griddle when you prefer your food to be exposed to direct heat from the grill and retain that authentic charcoal-grilled flavour.

Soapstone half-moon, natural stone cooking surface

Media luna de piedra de esteatita para el kamado Classic Joe

The soapstone half-moon is a natural stone surface that distributes heat evenly. Food rests directly on a solid slab, rather than on a metal grid.

It works very well with fish, vegetables and cuts of meat that you want to cook with constant thermal contact. It also helps to reduce the flare-ups caused by fat dripping onto the embers. Whilst the cast-iron griddle stands out for its double-sided design, soapstone expands the options for contact cooking within the same half-moon system.

Stainless steel charcoal basket

Cesta de carbón de acero inoxidable instalada en el kamado Classic Joe

The stainless steel charcoal basket organises the fuel within the combustion chamber. It allows air to flow between the pieces and separates out small particles, promoting cleaner combustion.

Its divider allows you to distribute the charcoal load across different zones to experiment with the heat. And when the kamado has cooled completely, it helps you separate the ash from the reusable charcoal: maintenance between sessions is easier and you make better use of the fuel.

Big Block XL charcoal, 2 bags of 9.07 kg

Carbón vegetal Big Block XL ardiendo en una barbacoa kamado

The pack includes two bags of Big Block XL charcoal, each weighing 9.07 kg. These are large chunks of 100% natural hardwood charcoal, designed for charcoal grilling at both high temperatures and for slow cooking.

The size of the pieces promotes prolonged burning, which is very useful for learning how to keep the kamado alight during a long barbecue. Any pieces that have not been used up can be reused, provided they are completely extinguished and cool. Together with the basket, you have everything you need to manage the embers right from your first few sessions, without having to buy the first two bags separately.

LED handle for cooking at night

Asa LED de Kamado Joe iluminando la carne durante una barbacoa nocturna

When cooking goes on until dusk, the LED-lit handle directly illuminates the cooking surface. It replaces the kamado’s conventional handle and directs the light onto the grates, exactly where you need to see how the food is cooking.

It has two brightness settings and a built-in button, and runs on four AA batteries (not included), so you don’t need a power socket. This means you can hold your tongs and handle the food without relying on a torch. When you’ve finished cooking, switch off the light and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cover for Classic Joe I with trolley

Funda negra Kamado Joe sobre la barbacoa Classic Joe con carrito

The Classic Joe I cover with trolley protects your barbecue on days when you’re not using it. Its snug fit adapts to the kamado and shields it from rain, wind and sun whilst in storage.

It is made from water-resistant polyester that is resistant to UV-induced fading, so the kamado can be left covered on the terrace, in the garden or in the outdoor kitchen. Put it on once the barbecue has completely cooled down and is no longer hot.

This guide explains how to use and maintain the Kamado Joe Classic Joe I bundle step by step: from lighting it for the first time and controlling the temperature to cleaning the ceramic barbecue and each accessory. These tips will help you cook safely and keep your kamado in good condition for many years.

In this guide:

Before using your kamado for the first time: positioning and assembly

Before lighting your Classic Joe I, check that the barbecue and accessories are correctly installed.

  1. Choose a safe location. Place the kamado on a stable, level, non-combustible surface and use it outdoors only. Follow the safety clearances in the manual and keep it at least 3 metres away from structures and combustible materials.
  2. Check the trolley. Make sure it is correctly assembled, the barbecue is securely seated and the wheel brakes are engaged.
  3. Inspect the ceramic parts and internal components. Make sure the Divide & Conquer system, cooking grates and heat deflectors are correctly positioned.
  4. Clean the cooking surfaces. Remove any packaging remnants and prepare each accessory according to the instructions for its material.
How to install the stainless steel charcoal basket in the Classic Joe kamado

How to install the charcoal basket

Place the stainless steel basket in the firebox following the assembly instructions. It allows air to circulate and makes it easier to separate reusable charcoal from the ash.

If you want to create separate burning zones, use the divider supplied with the basket. Check that the assembly is stable before fitting the cooking system.

How to light a kamado and control the temperature

Top air vent and thermometer on the Classic Joe I kamado for temperature control
  1. Add the charcoal. Fill the firebox with Big Block charcoal without exceeding the 2.7 kg load limit specified for the Classic Joe I.
  2. Light the charcoal. Use one or two suitable firelighters. Never use petrol, alcohol or other flammable liquids.
  3. Open the vents. Leave the lid open for approximately 10 minutes with the bottom air vent fully open.
  4. Close the lid. When the temperature is within approximately 10 °C of your target, gradually reduce the vent openings.
  5. Stabilise the heat. Wait 10–15 minutes to assess each vent adjustment. Initial stabilisation can take 20–60 minutes.

The key rule for controlling your kamado's temperature: to increase the heat, allow more air in; to reduce it, narrow the vent openings. Make small adjustments and wait before making further changes.

Opening the lid safely: when cooking above approximately 175–180 °C, first open the lid by about 5–8 cm for around 5 seconds before lifting it fully. This reduces the risk of a flare-up caused by a sudden influx of oxygen.

How to cook with each accessory in the bundle

JoeTisserie rotisserie: how to roast chicken and large cuts of meat

JoeTisserie rotisserie fitted to a Classic Joe kamado for roasting chicken

The JoeTisserie cooks whole chickens and other large cuts of meat through continuous rotation.

Fit the ring onto the kamado, secure the food firmly to the spit rod and check that it is centred and balanced. Place the rod in its supports and make sure it rotates freely before you start cooking.

Keep the motor and its cable away from direct heat and moisture. Use a suitable food thermometer to check whether the food is cooked.

Reversible cast iron griddle: how to use it

Use the smooth side for smash burgers, eggs and foods that need continuous contact with the cooking surface. When you want grill marks on meat and vegetables, turn the griddle over and cook on the ridged side.

Preheat the griddle gradually and add a little oil if the recipe calls for it. Handle it with suitable tools and gloves, as cast iron retains heat for a long time.

Fish and vegetable cooking grate for the kamado

Fit the grate into the Divide & Conquer system. Its slots allow you to cook fish, asparagus, mushrooms and other vegetables while reducing the risk of small pieces falling onto the charcoal.

Lightly oil the surface if the recipe requires it, and avoid moving the fish until it releases easily. Use a suitable spatula to prevent delicate foods from breaking apart.

Half-moon soapstone: cooking on stone

Soapstone provides a solid cooking surface that distributes heat evenly. It works well for delicate fish, eggs, vegetables and meat.

Heat the stone gradually and avoid sudden temperature changes. Do not pour cold water onto the hot stone or place it on surfaces that cannot withstand high temperatures.

LED handle for cooking at night

The integrated light helps you see your food when cooking at night. It runs on four AA batteries and has two brightness settings.

Switch off the light when you do not need it to save battery power. This accessory must not be used with the DoJoe system.

How to extinguish a kamado and let it cool

  1. Reduce the oxygen supply. When you have finished cooking, close the bottom air vent completely.
  2. Close the top vent. When the thermometer drops below 205 °C, close the top vent almost completely, leaving a small gap as instructed in the Classic Joe I manual.
  3. Allow it to cool. Do not remove the charcoal, hot accessories or ash until everything is completely cold.
  4. Save reusable charcoal. Once it is cold and fully extinguished, separate any usable pieces from the ash for your next cook.

Important: never use water to put out the fire inside the kamado. Do not cover the barbecue while it is still warm.

How to clean your kamado and its accessories

How to clean the ceramic parts and cooking grates and remove ash from the Classic Joe I

Once the barbecue is cold, remove accumulated ash with a suitable tool. Clean the cooking grates and remove residue from the interior surfaces with a soft-bristled brush.

The ceramic interior does not need washing with water or harsh chemicals. Avoid knocking the ceramic components while cleaning.

How to clean and care for the cast iron griddle

Remove food residue with a suitable brush. Dry the griddle thoroughly and apply a very thin layer of vegetable oil to protect it from rust.

Do not leave it to soak or store it while damp. Follow Kamado Joe's seasoning and maintenance instructions to preserve the cast iron's protective coating.

How to clean the stainless steel fish and vegetable cooking grate

Allow the grate to cool and clean the slots to remove food residue and grease. Use warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a brush that will not damage the surface. Rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.

How to clean the soapstone

Kamado Joe recommends allowing the soapstone to cool completely before handling it. You can then wash it with warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft brush. The manufacturer also allows it to be cleaned in the dishwasher.

Store it in a cool, dry place. Do not use it on a domestic hob or place it in an oven during its self-cleaning cycle.

How to clean the JoeTisserie rotisserie

Switch off and unplug the motor before dismantling the assembly. Once it is cold, remove grease residue from the stainless steel spit rod and forks.

Kamado Joe states that washable parts can be cleaned in the dishwasher. This does not apply to the electric motor: never immerse it in water or put it in the dishwasher.

How to clean the charcoal basket

Once the charcoal is completely cold and extinguished, carefully lift the basket and separate usable pieces from the ash. Remove accumulated ash before putting the basket back.

How to clean the LED handle

Clean the outer surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth and prevent water from entering the battery compartment. Do not immerse it in water or use abrasive cleaning products.

Check the batteries occasionally and remove them if you will not be using the light for an extended period.

Routine maintenance and storage of the Classic Joe I

Deep-cleaning your kamado: self-cleaning with heat

The official manual describes a procedure for cleaning the kamado's interior using heat. Only carry this out by following those instructions and first removing any additional accessories that are not part of the process.

  1. Remove the JoeTisserie, cast iron griddle, soapstone and any other additional accessories.
  2. Position the Divide & Conquer system and both heat deflectors as instructed in the manual.
  3. Light the charcoal and fully open the top and bottom vents.
  4. With the lid closed, bring the temperature up to approximately 315 °C and maintain it for 15–20 minutes.
  5. Close the bottom vent, wait another 15–20 minutes and then close the top vent, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  6. Once the kamado is completely cold, remove any remaining residue with a soft brush.

Kamado Joe recommends thoroughly cleaning the interior once or twice a year. To do this, carefully remove the internal components and clear away any ash that has accumulated between the ceramic parts.

Preventative checks: occasionally check that the fixings are tight and that the gaskets and components are in good condition. Do not dismantle the hinge or loosen the bands without following the manufacturer's specific procedure and using the specified tools.

How to protect your kamado with the included cover

Kamado Joe Classic Joe I with trolley and protective cover included in the bundle

The Classic Joe cover protects the barbecue from rain, wind and sun when it is not in use.

Before fitting it, check that the kamado is completely cold and that the exterior is dry.

Keep the cover clean, remove accumulated dirt occasionally and let it dry before folding it away.

How to store the accessories and charcoal

Store the cast iron griddle clean, dry and protected with a thin layer of oil. Keep the soapstone in a dry place where it is protected from knocks and falls.

Protect the JoeTisserie's electrical components from moisture. Check the LED handle's batteries and remove them if you will not be using the light for an extended period.

Store bags of Big Block charcoal in a dry place, away from water and sources of ignition. Unburnt charcoal can be reused as long as it is completely cold and extinguished.

Remember: thorough cleaning, moisture control and regular checks help keep all your Kamado Joe equipment in excellent condition.

JoeTisserie chicken with lemon and rosemary

Chicken roasting on the JoeTisserie in a Kamado Joe kamado

One way to discover kamado cooking is to prepare a whole chicken on the JoeTisserie rotisserie included in the Classic Joe I bundle. The continuous rotation helps achieve even browning, while Big Block charcoal adds the distinctive character of cooking over coals.

Serves: approximately 4. Preparation: 20 minutes. Approximate cooking time: 1–2 hours, depending on the size of the chicken and the heat. Kamado temperature: around 150 °C.

Items from the bundle you will use: Classic Joe I, JoeTisserie, charcoal basket and Big Block charcoal. You will also need a food thermometer and kitchen string.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken weighing approximately 1.5–2 kg, with giblets removed
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 8 g salt and black pepper to taste
  • Big Block lumpwood charcoal from the bundle, as needed to maintain the fire

Step-by-step method

  1. Prepare the chicken. Pat it dry with kitchen paper without washing it. Mix the oil, paprika, garlic, rosemary, lemon zest, salt and pepper. Spread the mixture all over the skin and secure the legs and wings with kitchen string.
  2. Light the kamado. Place Big Block charcoal in the basket and, following your barbecue's manual, arrange the coals towards the back so that the heat is not concentrated directly beneath the chicken. Adjust the air vents until the temperature stabilises at approximately 150 °C.
  3. Fit the JoeTisserie. Install the ring according to its instructions, pass the spit rod through the chicken, secure the forks firmly and check that the assembly rotates freely and is balanced before switching on the motor.
  4. Roast with continuous rotation. Close the lid and keep the fire steady. Allow around 1–2 hours, but check doneness with a thermometer: the chicken must reach an internal temperature of 74 °C in the thickest parts of the breast and thigh, without the probe touching the bone. Cooking time alone does not guarantee that it is done.
  5. Rest and serve. Stop the motor, remove the chicken using heat-resistant gloves and leave it to rest for about 10 minutes before carving.

An idea for using another accessory: after safely removing and dismantling the rotisserie, you can cook courgette and pepper on the half-moon fish and vegetable cooking grate included in the bundle. This makes a simple side dish to serve with the chicken.

Smash burgers with cheese on the Kamado Joe griddle

A way to try out the reversible cast iron griddle included in the Classic Joe I Black Friday Bundle. Its smooth side allows you to press the meat against the hot iron to create a golden crust, while Big Block charcoal adds the distinctive character of kamado cooking.

Smash burgers with melted cheese on the smooth side of the Kamado Joe cast iron griddle

Makes: 4 double burgers.

Approximate total time: 25–35 minutes, depending on lighting and griddle preheating time.

Suggested kamado temperature: 200–230 °C.

Items from the bundle used: reversible griddle (smooth side), charcoal basket and Big Block charcoal.

Ingredients

  • 400 g minced beef, divided into 8 balls of 50 g each.
  • 4 burger buns.
  • 8 slices of Cheddar cheese.
  • 1 small onion, very thinly sliced.
  • Sliced gherkins.
  • Salt, pepper and a little oil.
  • Burger sauce to taste.

Step-by-step method

  1. Light the kamado. Prepare the coals using Big Block charcoal, fit the reversible griddle with the smooth side facing upwards and allow the iron to heat gradually. Adjust the airflow to maintain an approximate kamado temperature of 200–230 °C.
  2. Shape the portions. Divide the meat into eight balls of approximately 50 g, without packing them too tightly. Prepare the onion, gherkins and cheese before you start, as cooking will be quick.
  3. Smash and brown. Lightly oil the surface if necessary. Place a few balls of meat on the griddle at a time and flatten them into thin patties using a sturdy spatula. Season with salt and pepper and allow a crust to form before turning; as a guide, cook for about 2 minutes on the first side.
  4. Melt the cheese. Turn each patty, add the Cheddar and continue cooking. The time required depends on the thickness and the actual temperature of the griddle. For food safety, minced beef must reach an internal temperature of 71 °C; check with a thermometer, inserting the probe from the side if the patties are very thin.
  5. Assemble and serve. Lightly toast the buns on a free area of the cooking surface, spread with sauce and assemble each burger with two patties, onion and gherkins. Serve immediately.

Tip: cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the half-moon griddle and keep the surface hot. Use utensils suitable for cast iron and follow the manufacturer's instructions for handling and caring for the griddle.

Lemon sea bream with courgette and asparagus

Kamado Joe half-moon stainless steel fish and vegetable cooking grate

Accessory: Kamado Joe half-moon fish and vegetable cooking grate

Serves: 2   Approximate time: 25–30 min   Suggested temperature: 190–210 °C

A recipe that makes use of the dedicated fish and vegetable cooking grate, allowing you to cook delicate fillets and vegetable side dishes without needing a solid griddle.

Ingredients

  • 2 skin-on sea bream fillets (150–200 g each)
  • 1 small courgette
  • 6 green asparagus spears
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 garlic clove
  • Extra virgin olive oil, thyme, salt and pepper

Step-by-step method

  1. Prepare the kamado. Light the Big Block charcoal, stabilise the Classic Joe I at around 200 °C and fit the dedicated cooking grate into the Divide & Conquer system.
  2. Season the vegetables. Cut the courgette into thick slices, trim the woody ends from the asparagus and toss with oil, chopped garlic, salt and pepper.
  3. Grill the vegetables. Place them on the cooking grate for approximately 6–10 minutes, turning as needed. Remove and keep warm.
  4. Cook the fish. Pat the fillets dry, add a little oil and salt, and place the sea bream skin-side down for approximately 5–7 minutes. Turn carefully only if necessary.
  5. Check doneness. Continue cooking until the fish reaches 63 °C in its thickest part. The exact time depends on the thickness and the actual cooking temperature.
  6. Plate up. Serve the fish with the vegetables, a squeeze of lemon and fresh thyme.

The result: Sea bream with a hint of charcoal flavour and golden vegetables, finished with lemon and thyme.

Eggs cooked on soapstone with rustic toast

Eggs and toast on a half-moon soapstone fitted in a Kamado Joe

Accessory: Kamado Joe Classic Joe half-moon soapstone

Serves: 2   Approximate time: 15–20 min   Suggested temperature: 180–200 °C

Discover a different way to use your kamado: the soapstone provides a solid surface for cooking eggs and toasting bread with evenly distributed heat.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 small slices of rustic bread
  • 1 ripe tomato
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt, pepper and fresh rosemary

Step-by-step method

  1. Prepare the surface. Fit the half-moon soapstone into the Divide & Conquer system and allow it to heat gradually with the kamado to approximately 180–200 °C.
  2. Lightly oil the surface. Spread a thin layer of oil over the hot stone using heat-resistant utensils.
  3. Cook the eggs. Crack the eggs onto the soapstone. Close the lid when necessary and adjust the heat to prevent burning. For greater food safety, cook the whites and yolks until firm.
  4. Toast the bread. Place the slices on a free area of the stone and toast for approximately 1–2 minutes per side, keeping an eye on their colour.
  5. Prepare the accompaniment. Away from the barbecue, grate the tomato and mix it with olive oil and a pinch of salt.
